MPH

The Master of Public Health degree program (KU-MPH) at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita is nationally accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. The 42-credit-hour generalist degree program offers coursework on both the Wichita campus and the University of Kansas Medical Center-Kansas City campus. The program is designed to prepare public health practitioners and provide opportunities for health care providers, insurers and researchers to develop and apply individual and population-based approaches to improve the public health in Kansas, the region and the nation.

The KU-MPH degree program meets the needs of many working health care professionals who complete the degree on a part-time basis. MPH skills may be used to assess health characteristics and risk factors in populations; plan, implement and evaluate an intervention to improve the health of a population; conduct research and evaluate health outcomes; incorporate preventive practices into care of individual patients; investigate outbreaks of disease or symptoms in populations; and use appropriate data to formulate public policy.

MD/MPH

The MD/MPH dual degree program is a five-year program of study in which the medical student takes one year to complete the requirements for his/her MPH degree earned through the Departments of Preventive Medicine and Public Health in both Kansas City and Wichita. This can be accomplished either between the second and third, or between the third and fourth, years of medical school.

Students admitted into the MD/MPH Dual Degree program must complete the MD degree requirements as prescribed by the School of Medicine. They will complete the MPH degree in three semesters - beginning in the Summer Semester (June), and proceeding through the Fall Semester (August) and the Spring Semester (January) - with completion by the end of May. Students will have two options for completing the MPH degree within the MD/MPH Dual Degree Program:

PLAN A

• Year One and Two - Complete the first two years of medical school
• Take USMLE - Step I Exam (May)
• Year Three - (June - May) Complete the MPH Degree
• Years Four and Five - Complete the final two years of medical school

PLAN B

• Years One and Two - Complete the first two years of medical school
• Take USMLE - Step I Exam (May)
• Year Three - (June - May) Complete first clinical year of medical school
• Year Four - (June- May) Complete the MPH Degree
• Year Five - Complete the final year of medical school
