Biosketch

Dr. Paschal is an assistant professor with the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita (KUSM-W).  Her research examines the social determinants that contribute to health disparities.  She is currently a co-investigator on a study that is assessing the risk factors for lower live birth rates among racial and ethnic minorities being treated with assisted reproductive technologies. Formerly, she worked with a study that examined the individual, community, and social factors associated with disparities among African American adolescents and substance use. Recently, she conducted a study that examined factors impacting health disparities among minorities and low income populations with epilepsy and is currently Principle Investigator for the 3 year epilepsy grant.

A great part of Dr. Paschal’s work also focuses on health interventions. Most notably has been her work with nutrition education and physical fitness programs for African Americans. Additionally, her work has targeted individuals with low health literacy and low health numeracy skills. Currently, Dr. Paschal is the principal investigator of a project that is determining the best practices among immunization services in the state of Kansas. She is also a co-investigator on a NCI-funded study which is seeking to improve employment among gynecologic cancer survivors.

In addition to research, Dr. Paschal also teaches in the Master of Public Health program. Her courses include the Social and Behavioral Aspects of Public Health core course, as well as the Cultural Competency elective. She also serves on several councils and committees at KUSM-W and in the community.
